Sadly New Line (the film company) were so petrified by the massive anti-organised religion message contained in the movie triggering a wave of outrage in the USA, they meddled with it and diluted it. The situation was so bad the films original director resigned, before being begged to come back to it after the second director had mad a start to things.
Then, they cut the books ending (supposedly to be done in the second film) so it had an 'up beat' ending, but which made it feel the ending was abrupt, as well as other edits. They dumbed down, sanitised and ruined one of the best children's books of the past two decades.
The film didn't make them a profit, and they won't make any sequels. The only hope is that their rights will expire and it will be made again. You'd be better of doing it cheaper and truer to the book than spending $150 million on a film so poor I almost cried when I saw it, at the thought of what had been lost. If I was Phillp Pullman I'd regard it as a big, big mistake.
